“Murder! Death!”

I sighed at the squeaky voice emanating from the turquoise bubble floating in front of my face and resisted the urge to pop it with a blast of hellfire.

To be fair, it was a surreal scene. We’d all arrived at the pond before the allotted time, the three of us lining up to face the waterline. It had been a normal pond for… all of 2.4 seconds. Then, right before our eyes, the water had begun to boil, becoming a seething mass of white on top that looked kinda like white frosting before the silver-blue light of an opening portal shone from the depths. I’d tensed, waiting for tentacles to shoot out from the depths and attack us.

What I didn’t expect was for turquoise bubbles to rise from the surface of the pond… each one containing a very small kraken. My lips tried to quirk up at the corners, unable to take the cute one hovering in front of me yelling about murder and death seriously.

Tiny krakens. Awesome.

“Mom…” I whispered out of the corner of my mouth, trying not to smile. “Are they using a size reduction spell? Like to compensate for the pressure or something?”

She shook her head slightly, black hair dancing over her shoulders. “Nope, they really are that small. All those legends about kraken? They use size enhancement spells.”

I held back my snigger with extreme force of will. Seriously. Someone should give me a medal or something, because… tiny krakens were so cute! Even if they were homicidal maniacs threatening murder right in front of my face. Four other bubbles floated from the surface of the water to join the first, their passengers' high, squeaky voices joining the din.

“Murder! Death!”

“We must have justice!”

“Vengeance!”

“Frozen peas!”

“That’s enough of that!” I said in my firmest "outside" voice. “Wait…” I paused to look at the kraken at the back of the group. A small pink one. (Apparently krakens come in different colors. Who knew?) “Justice and vengeance I get. But… frozen peas?”

The pink kraken shrugged, looking guilty as it wavered from side to side in the air. “Uhhhm… I really hate frozen peas?”

I shrugged. “Whatever floats your boat, I guess… Okay, who’s in charge?”

Three krakens rushed me at once, almost enveloping my head in their little watery bubbles. “Me! Me! Me!”

I put my hand up, halting them from giving me a reverse diving helmet and hoping that didn’t piss the awkward little bastards off further. But they weren’t even looking at me anymore. Instead, they’d turned to glare at each other.

“I’m in charge,” a deep red one announced, its voice a little deeper than the others. “My family’s line goes all the way back to the day fish-kind returned to the oceans.”

“Pffft!” another blew a raspberry, its beak clicking in annoyance. “Your grandmother was a yeti! Your line is not pure!”

I had to blink at that one. A yeti and a werekraken? I thought my life was different. And the logistics of such a relationship… I blinked again. Mind-bleach. I needed it.
